Vogue Cover Controversy

March 26, 2008

DeMarco Morgan sounds off on the controversy surrounding the Vogue cover featuring Lebron James and model Gisele Bundchen.

——————————–

As an African American man… I know all too well what it means and feels like to be stereotyped or prejudged before someone cares to honor and respect your character and intelligence without looking at your race.

In response to the cover of Vogue magazine… it doesn’t offend me one bit. But if it opens the discussion of race and how black men “should be” and “are portrayed” in our society… let’s discuss it.

Let’s ask ourselves how can we as a country move past the stereotypes of any one… regardless of race, gender or religion, etc.

If Lebron is okay with it– I’m fine with it. If he was offended– it would be a different story.

There are individuals who refuse to move forward when it comes to race and/or gender because of the unforgettable history of our nation that very few are comfortable with discussing.  Just take a look at the current presidential race!

But there are also those individuals who find it hard to move forward because of the deep pains and hurt from the days of Jim Crow. Many who fought just so that I, too, would enjoy a free America.

There’s room at the table for everyone. Ask yourself…. what will you do to help make this world a better place for all of us?

March’s First Wednesday

March 5, 2008

It’s a busy day in the newsroom… Wednesdays are always packed because of overlapping schedules… but today promises to be an exciting day in our business.

I’ve never been a fan of politics.  It wasn’t something that I followed, just something that happened.  This year, it’s hard not to pay attention to what’s going on.  Last night I stayed up until NBC News called Texas… and this morning, we’re no closer to knowing who is going to be the Democratic nominee.  It’s an amazing political season, although I can’t imagine having this go all the way through the summer and possibly having another Florida election connection (in the middle of hurricane season! ack!)  We’ll have a complete wrapup of last night’s events… plus Sen. McCains big endorsement, and visit to FL.

In the past few weeks, it seems as if we’ve been covering more and more stories about gun violence.  It’s very easy to discount each story as just another senseless death, but last week it hit close to home.  I know the family of a 24 year old man lost to gun violence last week… and putting a face to the crime made me stop and think about all the victims we’ve reported on in the recent weeks.   The father of 5 who went back into Wendy’s to get a toy missing from the kid’s meal… the young man only a few days older than me who worked with his father and visited his grandmother on a daily basis… the teenager lucky to be alive after a bullet grazed his head after school…. the police officer only 10 months into his new job, rushed to the hospital.  When it hits close to home, it makes you stop and reflect on what’s going on in our society.  We are working on putting all this violence in perspective for you.  Are the numbers up… or are you just hearing about more of them?  What about those stories that don’t get reported?

As with any other day, stories are fluid and the newsroom is buzzing.  We’ll update you as the day goes on.
