The Sky Is Falling

September 29, 2008

Sitting in the afternoon editorial meeting in silence, with all the TVs tuned to a different channel, all reporting the same grim outlook, with banners displaying the same grim news… it does one thing… gives you a sinking feeling in your stomach that things are going to get worse before they get better. The Bailout Vote was a bust today… and with it, the Dow took a wild ride, prompting all sorts of special reports, urgent alerts, and analysis on every tv and computer.

Tonight we’ve got team coverage on the wild ride that has become our economy. Look for Steve Handelsman, Nick Bogert and Hank Tester to bring you a comprehensive look at what our nation is currently facing.

Monday Breakdown

September 22, 2008

It’s Monday, and in the language of the Fall TV lineup, that means it’s Heroes night. We’ve got a preview before all the fun begins in tonight’s premiere.

Plus– you keep hearing about this billion dollar bailout… but what exactly does that mean? Hank Tester breaks it all down for us.

And the doctor/author of the popular Zone Diet has teamed up with a local doctor to come out with a new line of foods meant to trigger hormones in your brain that’ll tell you you’re full.

Tedious Tuesday

September 16, 2008

It’s a chilling case that I just can’t turn away from. A middle school student accused of slitting the throat of his best friend in the bathroom of their school. The case of Michael Hernandez is finally being heard in an Orlando courtroom (in an attempt to find an impartial jury). Our reporter is in the courtroom witnessing the proceedings, and is keeping an up to the minute account of everything going on. We’ll have a live report from Tisha Lewis in Orlando.

Plus– it’s something you might do without even thinking about it… leaving your garage door open. Tonight a warning from police after several residents find themselves becoming victims of crimes.

And the next time you go to the mall, you won’t have to pick up a greasy pretzel at the food court… now you can choose to be fancy.

See you tonight at 7.

Happy Birthday To Us

September 10, 2008

….. aaaand we’re back!

We were out for a few days, but not by choice. There was just so much going on around here, there wasn’t a second to spare. Hurricane Ike, although it spared us, kept us busy around here. Extra newscasts and extended hours, as the outerbands of the storms hit our friends in the Florida Keys, and the Caribbean… where so many South Florida residents have friends and family. We continue to monitor the storm as it sets its sights on the Gulf. (Make sure to keep in touch with our friends at the Tropical Blog)

There’s more drama brewing at the Miami-Dade School Board.  Seems the superintendent is out, but not without a payout.  We’ll break it all down.

Plus– there’s a quiet celebration going on around here (or maybe just at my desk). One year ago today, we launched this newscast. It’s easy to be amazed at how quickly a year passes, but for now, we say… Happy Birthday South Florida Nightly News.

Triple Alliterations

September 3, 2008

Triple Trouble.
Tropical Triplets.
Three’s A Crowd.
Three’s Company.

Whatever you want to call it… we’ve got three tropical systems that we’re monitoring. Hanna, Ike, and Josephine. Right now it looks like Hanna will be just missing us… but don’t take my word for it, visit our friends over at the Tropical Blog.

So needless to say, we’ve got all sorts of storm coverage for you. Everything you ever wanted to know about the tracks, the possibilities, the current stats… Chief Meteorologist Paul Deanno is back from his stint at MSNBC, and will be bringing all that to us.

Then there’s the other big news story that would’ve been our main focus this week, if it weren’t for the storms… the RNC. The much-talked about Governor Sarah Palin will be speaking tonight, and her pregnant 17 year-old daughters fiance will be there as well. I mention it only because it’s been all the buzz lately. Let’s see how, or if she addresses it tonight. We’ve got a web poll right now on nbc6.net asking what you think about the vetting process.

It’s a night of two big stories… and we hope to see you at 7pm!
