Chilly Start to ‘08

January 2, 2008

I’ve never owned a coat in my life.

I’m talking about a wool blend, thick coat… the kind that keep out all the wind, dress up any outfit, and are a dime a dozen anywhere outside of the Sunshine State. I’ve lived in Miami my entire life (give or take a few years for college), and have never had to worry about “cold.” I have yet to master the art of layering, I’ve spent more Christmas Days in shorts than in snow, and I don’t know if I’ll ever stop thinking that 60 degrees is cold. I own more flip flops than close-toed shoes, more tanktops than sweaters, and more bathing suits than scarves. Years ago, I realized that I’m really a Florida girl, during one of the first times I was ever in snow– in sneakers– and I didn’t understand why my socks were soaked.

With all that said… South Florida is going to see some of the coldest temperatures in several years tonight. We’ve been talking about it for days, and tonight is the night. Coldest I’ve ever been in is about 20 degrees… in Gainesville… so we’ll see what happens tonight. Coincidentally, in preparation for a trip up north I bought my first coat during a holiday sale a few days ago… and it seems like I’ll get to use it at home.

But don’t expect me to get used to it.

Ricky’s Back And So Are Gas Prices

November 14, 2007

It’s tough being a South Florida sports fan these days. The Miami Dolphins seem to be going for a perfect record these days… but not the kind that brought glory to the 1972 team. Instead of the undefeated season, they’re hoping to have a completely defeated season. With zero wins thus far, the news that Ricky Williams is being allowed back into the NFL brings a glimmer to the eye of many Ricky fans. But the question is… will the ‘Fins take him back? Adam Kuperstein is live at Dolphins Camp with a look at that story.

After several dry days, the skies have opened up once again… and today we got several reports of water spouts.

We’re already going to be opening up our wallets for the holidays… and now we’re going to have it open it even wider to be able to fill up your gas tank. Prices at the pump are up… Ari Odzer takes a look at that.

And a Miami Beach resident has been voted Sexiest Man Alive by People Magazine… find out who, tonight at 7.

Gloomy Day… but it’s Friday!

October 26, 2007

I don’t know about you but the rain seems to make the day go by that much slower, and a little more difficult to get through. It was cloudy outside but clear in our morning meeting everyone was feeling that way… and was happy it was Friday. A lot of people had trouble getting into work on rain slicked roads… and once everyone was there we all spent a good amount of time chatting about some of the stories over the past 24 hours: How cute the little boy struck by a stray bullet in Miami was, and how disconcerting it was that he was talking about what happened to him like a 25 year old, instead of a 5 year old; All the questions surrounding a police involved in shooting in North Miami (Hetal Gandhi is following up on this today); How long was the rain going to last? I know we need it… but come on!; And how funny Jennifer Gray’s oversized cowboy hat looked as she covered fanstasy fest in Key West. Our white story board looked pretty empty this morning but it’s full now. Here’s some of what we’re working on for South Florida Nightly News at 7PM:

Rain rain go away:

But it doesn’t look like it will any time soon. Chief Meteorologist Paul Deanno will have the details.

Big weekend:
From the world’s biggest boat show to Fantasy Fest: the funnest Halloween party in the country, we’ll show you where pretty much everyone will be this weekend. Sharon Lawson and Jennifer Gray have us covered.
